Lower Woodland TEAM

The Lower Woodland Team consists of 3 Interns: Long Le, Zi Zhang, and Jaytee Teav, and 4 Coaches in Training: Danny Del Fierro, Jaspar Dorhs, Minh Tran, and Zev Magasis.  This first cohort – applied for the program and went through our interview panel.

In August the Team trained with Skate Like a Girl programs at Sea Sk8.  They learned how to do one-on-one instruction at the 12 and Under program, and supported the Ladies Nights.  Additionally they worked at Manik Mondays with Marshall Reid, and other big events like the Circa Demo.  Outside of SeaSk8 – they helped at local events like at the Subway Games, Red Bull Rivals, and Redmond’s Skate 425.

Part of their training they were able to help plan a team building trip to Lewiston, ID where they helped demo and give prizes at their Dew Park grand opening.

In September the team launched with a community skateboarding event at Lower Woodland (LW) drawing over 100 people to participate. Every Saturday from 10am-12pm they provided 12 and Under Skate– a free skateboarding activities and park monitoring.  The Mayor even stopped by at one of their 12 and Unders.  Outside of LW — they helped to open Delridge park (where they hung out with the Mayor again), and tabled/gave free clinics at the Moving Planet Seattle Event at South Lake Union.  Since August – they have taught over 100 people to skateboard.

In October they will be heading indoors to help with Girls in Space, and hosting YES Smart Goals – a program to encourage middle school skateboarders to do well in school week by week – with the reward of skateboarding for free at Innerspace for 1 hour.  YES will also be organizing 2 service projects and hosting a Halloween event open to the community at Innerspace skatepark,

Currently we are working with community leaders Nancy Folosom (Delridge) and Gloria Briggs and Troy Washington (Jefferson) to write another Small and Simple grant to bring YES to those new skateparks.  If you are interested in helping or would like more information – email us at YES@skatelikeagirl.com.
