Fall is a great season for awards and write-ups!  Skate Like a Girl was recently featured in Seattle’s Child Magazine, and board chair Nancy Chang will be receiving the Seattle Parks Denny Award, for her volunteer work with Skate Like a Girl and creating the Youth Employment Skateboarding program.

The Seattle’s Child article features the Metteer Family, and photos from volunteer Hollyanne Faber.  It’s a great article that looks at the growing popularity of skateboarding among kids, and how supportive parents are of the sport.

The Denny Award is also another great benchmark on how communities are excited about skateboarding and skateboarders.  Nancy is really excited about the award and is honored to be able to work with Skate Like a Girl volunteers and the Seattle Skateboarding community.  She believes that the award is a testament to the strong and growing skate scene in Seattle.  If you are in the Seattle area November 29th 6-8pm and would like to attend the awards ceremony – please RSVP with John.Kimble@seattle.gov.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and we are going to fund raise skater style. Join us for a day of skating, demo’s, swagg raffles, and awareness for young people.

Ripzu owes its creation to a young survivor and it’s logo to another young survivor. Help us raise funds to give back in the support of your loved ones. Check out Ripzu Skatepark on facebook for more updates, or check them out at www.ripzu.com.

The Skate Like A Girl Portland girls only session comes before Ripzu’s “Boarders 4 Boobies” event from 11-1pm. It is open to girls of all ages and abilities. We will have volunteer coaches on hand to help teach you the basics and more. If you need gear, we have it! We have a supply of boards, helmets and pads for use during the session. All proceeds from the Skate Like A Girl session will be donated to the Breast Friends (www.breastfriends.com).

Then after the session stick around from 1-5pm to skate the park, win some prizes, and watch some demos! Help us raise some money for Breast Cancer Awareness!

In 2009 a van load of us traversed to middle America – also known as Winnipeg.

It was the second time we rounded up an international crew of ladies to skate and make friends on the way.  Our end destination was to skate Chicks Flip Out – a contest put together by the Manitoba Skate Coalition and Rugged Riders.  Here are recaps: WOB 1 + WOB 2 (extra footage)
It was fun times.  Bummer it didn’t take place in 2010, but alas, we have memories.

So also – this video was part of an awesome photo show of the tour, taken by Nina Strusstrunk.  The show was part of the Ultra Bowl in Mälmo, Sweden this past August.  We are also looking into setting up a touring photo show if anyone is interested in wanting to host.

Thanks to James Starlin who edited all the footage.

    Bye-bye summer.
We will be going to our favorite indoor skateparks and continuing Ladies Nights and Girls in Space.

What’s Ladies Nights you ask?  Basically getting the gals together to skate. Make friends get tips from other gals that are there.  If you don’t have gear, let us know and we will bring some gear for you.

We have worked it out with local skateparks that want girls to come and skate!

Bellevue Skatepark: girls only session on Sundays from 5-8pm, the cost is $5 with a membership ($15 initial fee).
Skatebarn: has hosted the longest running girls skate free night on Wednesdays, so we should all go and capitalize on it.

Innerspace: 2nd Sundays of the month = Girls in Space, we rent out Innerspace
      1 hour clinics (10am -11am) are $15 for one person, $25 for 2, or $40 for a family of 4.
      Drop-in skate $5

Get the word out about the Ladies Nights and Girls in Space!

We also would love to get some new volunteers, so come skate and see what opportunities are available for you to help build Seattle’s girls skate scene!

Have ideas of where to go outside of Seattle to support girl skaters?  We heard through the grapevine that there is a new indoor park in Gig Harbor, people are wanting us to go skate Eastern Washington,  so maybe we will check these place out.
