Girls in Space will be cancelled tomorrow due to the forecast of snow.
We want to make sure everyone is safe and can make alternate plans.

Thanks for those who came out last week for the first Girls in Space and Wheels of Fortune.

11th Bday Celebration

Skate Like a Girl turns 11 in 2011! We are celebrating the weekend of August 6th and 7th. Sat August 6th 2-5pm, we will be kicking things off at the Muckleshoot Skatepark in Auburn, with a free event open to the community. Fun for the whole family! Come learn to skateboard, or show others your moves on your shred stick. BBQ and prizes.

On August 7th starting at 6:30pm, we will be at the Piranha Shop in Sodo with an art exhibit and other fun things like making buttons and silkscreening shirts. Bring your friends!

YES for YES (Youth Employment Skateboarding) Program!

Skate Like a Girl spearheaded a Seattle Department of Neighborhood Grant, and was notified on July 18, 2011 that the City of Seattle approved our plan for a youth employment program! 4 paid internships and 4 Coaches in Training (unpaid) positions are up for grabs!

Youth Employment Skateboarding (YES) is a program administered by Skate Like a Girl, through a City of Seattle Department of Neighborhood Grant.
This was made possible with the community support from residents in Fremont, Greenlake, and Wallingford, along with businesses and the skateboarding community.

YES is a leadership and employment training program for young skateboarders between the ages of 12 and 23.
The program will take place between August 1 – November 12, 2011. We are looking for 4 Interns, and 4 CITs. YES is open to Seattle residents only.

INTERNS paid for 16 – 23 year-olds

Service Learning Hours
Earn up to $800
Experience in a variety of areas (instructing, event organizing, civic engagement)

Coach in Training unpaid for 12 – 17 year-olds

Service Learning Hours (50 hours minimum)
Experience in a variety of areas (instructing, event organizing, civic engagement)

Young skateboarders can apply for this pilot project between Jul 24- Aug 1, 2011.

Seattle Summer Skate Camps

Hope everyone is as stoked for summer as we are!

This summer, a diverse array of camps will be offered in Bellevue, Redmond, Burien, and Seattle, catering to ages ranging 8 to 17.

Registration will be with the individual City.

Please make sure to fill out the attached waiver.
Each City will follow-up with their own waivers.

Seattle 2011 Summer Camps / Programs

Summer is right around the corner. Skate Like a Girl Seattle has been running skate camps in the Seattle area since 2005. This year we are proud to announce that we are in 4 cities – thanks to partnerships with the City of Seattle, Bellevue, Redmond and Burien. Registration will vary – but please pre-register here.

Learn to skateboard this summer! Whether you are a beginner or advanced – Skate Like a Girl camps are a place to make friends and build a community. We strive to have peer mentoring and connect skaters with varying life experiences.

What to expect by the end of camp? Beginners will be able to learn to confidently stand, push, and stop on a skateboard. This will include skateboarding on flat ground and gentle slopes and ramps. Additionally learn skateboarding terminology, skateboard maintenance, and park etiquette. Intermediates and advance skateboarders can get pointers on both street and ramp skateboarding – what they will learn will depend. Learning and mastering new tricks will vary – but our expectation is that intermediates can ollie, drop-in on ramps, and roll off of curbs / boxes. Advance skaters should have a few tricks under their belts and feel comfortable skateboarding switch.

Girls in Space is a program geared toward girls and beginners. This is a family learning environment where we encourage guys to be part of this community building event. We believe that building a healthy girl skateboarding is not about operating in a silo. We want to normalize skateboarding for girls – and also show that skateboarding allows for all ages, abilities, body sizes and genders.

Clinic Prices: $15 for 1 person, $25 for two people, $30 Family of 4
Drop-in Skate: $5

Equipment free to use – first come, first serve.

Cherry Blossom Festival April 2

This is the second year the Skateboarding community has been invited to be part of the Cherry Blossom Festival. Come skateboard, celebrate spring and Japanese culture. This event is free, and open to all ages and abilities. We will have a variety of activities for novices and experts.

Come early and sign-up for free skateboard clinic (10 am) with Skate Like a Girl. Watch Kaze Daiko and local teams from Skatebarn and BFC demo. Come showcase your talents at the Cherry Blossom Festival.

Girls in Space!

Girls in Space is a great time for families of all ages to come and skate!

Do you have a young girl that is itching to learn to skate? A family that wants to learn together? Well, Girls in Space is here to help! Skate Like a Girl rents Innerspace for two hours so kids and parents can learn to skate. The whole idea behind Girls In Space is that men and boys can be a part of our girl-positive atmosphere.

Clinics are from 10am-12pm. We start at 10:10 am sharp, so come at 10 am to check-in and put on gear. After the clinic volunteer instructors are still around to cheer you on and give you tips.

Are you a gal that has already logged sometime on skateboard, and you just want to roll around the ramps? Well, we have Free Skate time from 11am – 12pm.

Costs: $15 for a clinic, $5 for drop-in skate, $5 to borrow gear. (family rates available)
